Today is the day!
After a quick few hours at work (so I can out-process), we’re hitting the road! We originally planned on leaving first thing tomorrow morning, but we decided that trying to leave early in the morning would be too chaotic and stressful. This way, Mitch, Katie and Gus have the entire morning to load up the last of our things in the cars before we depart. Our intention is to make it all the way to Oklahoma City for the night. Which means by the time our heads hit the pillow tonight, we will no longer be Texans!
There are several details we thought you might be interested in regarding our departure. In order to avoid a terribly long run-on sentence and post (and because we’re still crazy-busy), we thought it’d be easiest to put together a bulleted-list. Besides, I love a good list.
- We foolishly posted on Wednesday with the title “Finished!”. In reality, we still had a bazillion things to wrap up (i.e. painting, cleaning, packing up odds and ends, etc…). While we hoped to have a relaxing few days post-ABF container departing, it’s been non-stop all week.
- No, our house hasn’t sold. Booo! It’s sort of our worst nightmare, but it wasn’t going to keep us from leaving. It will sell eventually…we hope.
- Yes, we really both quit our well-paying jobs in order to travel the country. Most people are divided over thinking it’s the greatest idea ever OR that we’re completely nuts. We’re on the fence.
- Mitch, Katie and I are all driving separately in order to move all three cars to Iowa. Gus (and his car seat) will ride with Mitch. Although it will be a very long ride to drive individually, we’re hoping it gives us all some time to decompress from the anxiety and stress we’ve experienced the last few weeks.
- The trip to Iowa will be split into three days; approximately seven hours of travel each day. We plan on spending the night in Oklahoma City tonight and Kansas City tomorrow night.
- We are moving our belongings temporarily to Iowa while we travel. We have not decided where we will settle. Our parents are not-so-secretly rooting for Iowa.
- Monday through Wednesday will be spent unloading the ABF trailer and prepping for our departure.
- We’ll depart first thing Thursday morning for Denver!
Again, thank you all so very much for your kind words of encouragement as we’ve gone through this process. Please bear with us while we navigate our new routine and find our new groove. We apologize in advance for not being able to blog read as much as we’d like over the next week while we’re in transit to Iowa.
We’ll leave you with a couple of photos we snapped of our now-empty house. It’s bittersweet to leave the home we’ve lived in the last seven years. Excuse the randomness of the rooms we photographed and the crappy quality. We snapped these at 1 am after our last round of touch-up painting and our bodies were screaming at us to go to bed.
Goodbye, San Antonio. Thanks for the memories!

Have a safe trip! Don’t add the stress of this blog updating to everything else you gotta figure out. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say we understand, and it’ll resume as soon as you are able. Oh and I think you are awesome for quitting your job to travel the country, as I’ve said before it’s something I would love to do one day. I’m sure everything will work out, you are too good a planner to not have it.
Have fun

I actually feel bittersweet after reading this post too! You’ve enjoyed San Antonio so much, yet there’s a whole new world out there to discover.
I think you made the right decision in leaving your jobs and living your dream while you’re still young. You’d have a million reasons not to do it later – all the more reason to grab it while you can! You’re both really good at what you do, so you’ll find new jobs wherever you settle. And don’t forget – you’re going to write a bestselling book about your travel adventures!
(Seriously!!)
We’ll be thinking about you guys and we wish you a VERY safe, fun adventure! Happy trails, Gus and family!

It is a false dichotomy between “best idea ever” and “completely nuts.” It can be both.
This is the kind of thing one can only do at certain points in one life– before kids or after retirement. And after retirement doesn’t always turn out the way you want it to. GO, enjoy, travel, see the world, and HAVE NO REGRETS. This is an awesome life adventure!
According to Gus

Exactly! No regrets should be the motto of our journey.

Have a great time travelling – though I think it’ll be more fun after you drop your stuff in Iowa and are all in the car together. 7 hrs of driving entirely solo, I hope you each have a ton of music ready to go with you in your individual cars.
hopefully your house sells soon

Exactly my thoughts! Driving solo was nice (and peaceful) for the first few hours, but then it got incredibly boring. Yes – we made sure to load up our iPods with travel playlists!

It’s here – the day has arrived!!! Sooo excited for you. I know I’ve said this before, but we quit our jobs, sold our house and possessions to travel the USA for a year and we still agree, many years on, that it was the best thing we ever did! There is so much amazing stuff to see out there and we still have life long friends we met on our trip. Other people may have reservations on what you’re doing, but no one can take your experiences away… have the best and safest time ever we cant wait to read about everything. Hugs to Gus

My mom and dad have had a fantasy of doing JUST what you’re doing. Only they’re not as brave as you, I guess so mom said she’s gonna live though you vi-care-ee-us-lee.
Have fun in Oklahoma City. That’s where my mom’s from, you know. And my Uncle lives in Kansas City. And of course, we live down the road from Denver in Collie-rado. (Can’t live in Denver though cuz they don’t like doggies that look like me.) So we pretty much know all those places you’re going to. Except Iowa. We don’t know anything about Iowa really.
Be safe in all your travels and I just can’t hardly wait to read abouts all your big adventures!

When the opportunity for this kind of adventure comes your way, you’ve just got to stop in your tracks and jump on the train. The journey may involve a diversion from your original course, but it doesn’t mean the end destination can’t be the same. Enjoy your time on the road—may it be full of wonderful discoveries!
